Mogadishu, Somalia — Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur (Madoobe), the Speaker of Parliament, has suspended 20 Members of Parliament (MPs). This suspension is due to security concerns.
The decision was announced in a letter from the Parliamentary Oversight Office on April 30, 2025. It follows chaos during a recent session of the Lower House that could not proceed.
Speaker Madoobe stated that this action aligns with parliamentary procedures. He aims to address emerging security threats in government institutions. The suspension is a precautionary measure amid ongoing safety challenges.
The affected MPs cannot attend sessions, but the duration of their suspension is unclear. This decision has sparked discussions among Somali lawmakers about its impact on parliamentary operations.
This suspension occurs during a political crisis in Mogadishu. Some lawmakers are trying to remove the Lower House speaker from office. They accuse him of unlawfully stripping MP Abib of his immunity for missing two sessions.
The government faces difficulties with reform efforts as well. A key NCC meeting scheduled for today in Mogadishu has been postponed until May 5.
