Southampton made Premier League history for the wrong reasons. They suffered the earliest relegation after losing 3-1 to Tottenham Hotspur. This defeat sends them back to the Championship with seven games left.
Brennan Johnson scored twice in the first half. He opened the scoring in the 13th minute, converting Djed Spence's low cross. Johnson added a second goal three minutes before halftime, finishing from James Maddison's header.
Mateus Fernandes scored a late goal for Southampton in the 90th minute. However, their hopes of survival ended when Mathys Tel converted a penalty in added time. The penalty followed a foul on Johnson.
The match had a subdued atmosphere at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Fans expressed frustration over chairman Daniel Levy and manager Ange Postecoglou. Despite this, Spurs quickly found their rhythm with Johnson and Lucas Bergvall challenging Southampton's defense.
Southampton did have some chances, including Kamaldeen Sulemana’s shot that hit the post after being deflected by Pedro Porro. Tottenham's win moved them up to 13th place in the table. Meanwhile, Southampton remains at the bottom with just 10 points. They now face a challenge to avoid setting a record for fewest points in Premier League history.
