Sports Minister Kofi Adams demands harsher sanctions for stadium violence in Ghana Premier League

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, is calling for stricter penalties. He wants tougher sanctions against those who break the law at football stadiums.

His comments follow recent violence during Matchday 33 of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League. The match between Basake Holy Stars and Nations FC was stopped due to chaos on the pitch.

The unrest started when Nations FC players protested a second penalty awarded to Basake Holy Stars. This led to Nations FC abandoning the match. Reports say both club owner Dr. Kwame Kyei and president Divine Kyei were attacked.

Minister Adams stressed the need for accountability and stronger deterrents. He stated that people must be punished for wrongdoing, regardless of their status or political ties.

"We must have the tenacity to punish wrongdoers," he told Sporty FM. "This is essential for our love of football." He warned that if violence continues, fans may turn to foreign leagues instead.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has launched a formal investigation into the incident.
