Sports Minister inaugurates Committee of Enquiry into death of Nigerian boxer

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation, led by Kofi Adams, has formed a committee. This seven-member Committee of Enquiry will investigate the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.

Olanrewaju collapsed during a match at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on March 29, 2025. He was later pronounced dead at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

The committee members are:

- Ambassador Major (RTD) Amarkai Amarteifio (Chairman)
- Peter Zwennes Esq.
- Ekow Asmah
- Samuel Bartels Esq.
- Eddie Pappoe
- Juliana Addo-Yobo Esq.
- Martin Engmann

At the inauguration on April 8 in Accra, Kofi Adams spoke about the incident. He said it "cannot just be swept under the carpet."

Adams noted that the committee has 21 days to submit its report. The investigation will look into immediate circumstances and broader issues in Ghana's boxing sector.

The Terms of Reference for the committee include:

1. Determine what led to Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju's death at Bukom Boxing Arena on March 29, 2025.

2. Assess if organizers took adequate steps to prevent his death according to international standards.

3. Evaluate whether licensing authorities in Nigeria followed proper procedures for allowing him to fight internationally.

4. Examine officials' conduct and recommend sanctions if necessary.

5. Suggest changes in technical and medical procedures for safety in boxing.

6. Consider any other relevant matters and make recommendations to improve boxing's image and ensure participant safety.
