Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, expressed condolences for Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.
Gabriel died after his light-heavyweight match against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu. The bout took place at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
In a press release on March 31, 2025, Adams shared his empathy. He reached out to Gabriel's family, friends, colleagues, and the Nigerian boxing community.
Adams described Gabriel as a talented athlete with passion and courage. He called Gabriel's death an irreplaceable loss to boxing.
The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) sanctioned the contest. Adams assured the public that the Ministry would cooperate fully with the GBA for a thorough investigation.
He stressed the importance of athlete safety. Adams pledged support for efforts to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Gabriel’s family and fellow athletes,” he stated. He encouraged the global boxing community to enhance athlete safety while honoring Gabriel’s legacy.
The Minister concluded by wishing for Gabriel’s soul to rest in peace. He reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to addressing safety concerns in sports.
