Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams announced plans for a committee. This committee will investigate the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju. He died at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Saturday.
The announcement follows a request from the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC). Dr. Rafiu Oladipo, the NBBC President, asked for an autopsy report. This request was made to the Ghana Boxing Authority after Olanrewaju passed away at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Minister Adams emphasized that no detail will be overlooked in the investigation. He urged both the Ghana Boxing Authority and NBBC to cooperate fully. Conflicting reports have emerged over recent days.
Adams spoke during an interview with Sporty FM on April 1st. He stated that they are just beginning this process. A committee will be formed to investigate what happened. He assured everyone that nothing will be covered up.
He hopes both sides will work together with the investigation team. The President and General Secretary of NBBC have also shared their views. The Ghanaian side has provided a statement signed by Amin Lamptey, which will guide the investigation.
Before this interview, the Sports Ministry expressed deep sadness over Olanrewaju's death. They offered condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, as well as to the NBBC and international boxing community.
The Ministry is awaiting an official medical report on his cause of death. They pledged full cooperation with the Ghana Boxing Authority for this investigation. They aim to improve athlete safety measures moving forward.
Minister Kofi Adams concluded by praying for peace for Olanrewaju’s soul. He urged unity in supporting those affected by this tragedy.
