Sports has the same value on the economy as other sectors – Osei Asibey

Charles Osei Asibey, General Secretary of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), has stressed the economic significance of sports and called on President-elect John Mahama to treat sports as a key sector, alongside agriculture, education, and health.

Citing examples from countries like the U.S., UK, and Japan, which benefit greatly from sports-related industries such as tourism, media, and sponsorship, Asibey highlighted the potential for sports to generate revenue and reduce healthcare costs.

He urged the government to prioritize sports, noting that increasing participation can drive business and economic growth.

However, he pointed out that Ghana struggles to add value to its players and sustain its domestic leagues.
