Tems Calls for Understanding of African Traditions
Nigerian musician Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, urges the world to learn about African traditions. She focuses on Ghana and Nigeria in her message.
In an interview with Fashion Bomb Daily at the 2025 Met Gala, she spoke about African music. The event took place on May 5. Tems highlighted the diversity and beauty of African culture.
She clarified that African music is more than just Afrobeats. “We can go further in every single aspect of sound,” she said. She mentioned genres like Amapiano, Afrosoul, R&B, and Afro Jazz.
Tems stressed the importance of cultural immersion beyond music. She encouraged people living outside Africa to visit Ghana and Nigeria. This would help them understand life in Africa better.
“So, I always encourage people to go to Lagos or Ghana,” she stated. She believes experiencing these places firsthand can change misconceptions.
According to Tems, Ghana and Nigeria are rich in traditions and creativity. “It’s the daily effort, the looks, the songs, the traditions,” she added.
