Nana Kwame Bediako, an independent presidential candidate for Ghana's 2024 elections, has criticised the state of football in the country, pointing to systemic issues within the Ghana Football Association (GFA). He highlighted the excessive influence of politics in player selection, claiming that some players must pay money to be considered for national teams, which undermines meritocracy.
Bediako also noted that restrictive management practices hinder players from maximizing their potential. “Get the player on the pitch. His brain is in his foot. Let him use it,” he stated in an interview on Asempa FM.
Additionally, he criticised the GFA for failing to adopt strategic practices from global organisations like FIFA.
He explained that FIFA’s financial strength lies in its broadcasting deals, which not only promote football but also establish global relationships with television networks.
These comments come in the wake of Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking the first time in 21 years the Black Stars will miss the tournament. The team’s absence has sparked national discussions about the poor state of football management in Ghana.
Bediako’s remarks emphasize the need for reforms in the GFA to focus on fairness, player development, and strategic partnerships to restore Ghana’s footballing glory.
