Xabi Alonso has begun a new era as Real Madrid's manager.
The 43-year-old was officially unveiled on Sunday. He signed a three-year deal, replacing Carlo Ancelotti. Ancelotti will now manage the Brazil men's national team.
Real Madrid had a disappointing season. They lost their La Liga title to Barcelona. They also fell to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey and Spanish Supercopa finals. Additionally, they were eliminated by Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals.
During his speech at Valdebebas training ground, Alonso said, “It’s the start of an era.” He expressed excitement for fans to begin this new chapter. “I am very happy to be here,” he added.
Alonso returned to Madrid after 11 years away as a player. He previously won a league and cup double with Bayer Leverkusen in 2023-24.
He paid tribute to Ancelotti, who had significant success with Real Madrid. “Carlo was my coach and a huge influence,” Alonso stated. He acknowledged that without Ancelotti's guidance, he might not be here today.
“I take over and carry on his legacy with great honour,” he said. Alonso will officially start his role on June 1, ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup next month.
