“Those who deserve punishment will receive it” – Kofi Adams on Nigerian Boxer’s death

Ghana’s Minister for Sports, Kofi Adams, has made a statement. He assured that those responsible for Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun's death will face consequences. This follows the tragic incident on April 6 at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra. Oluwasegun collapsed during a match and later died at the hospital.

Olanrewaju ‘Success’ Segun, a former champion, passed away during a fight. He was competing against Ghanaian fighter Jon Mbanugu on March 29, 2025.

In response to this tragedy, the Ministry of Youth and Sports is taking action. They are working with the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to form a seven-member committee. This committee will investigate the circumstances surrounding Oluwasegun's death.

The committee includes medical professionals, legal experts, and boxing regulatory representatives. Minister Adams emphasized how seriously the government is treating this issue.

He stated that if any mistakes were made, they will be addressed to prevent future incidents. If anyone violated rules or protocols, appropriate punishments will be enforced.

The incident has raised concerns in both Ghana and Nigeria. Many are questioning the safety measures in place for boxing events. GBA President Abraham Neequaye has promised full cooperation with the investigation. He affirmed that maintaining safety standards is a priority for protecting athletes' welfare.

The committee is expected to submit its findings within two weeks.
