The trial of Diego Maradona's medical staff has collapsed in Argentina. This happened after a judge was found to have participated in a documentary about the case.
The judge overseeing the trial announced it would need to start over. The trial began on March 11 and was expected to last until July.
Seven members of Maradona's medical team face charges of negligent homicide. They are accused in connection with the former footballer's death in 2020. All seven deny the allegations.
One presiding judge, Julieta Makintach, stepped down this week. Maradona, a former Napoli and Argentina midfielder, died at age 60 from a heart attack. He had been recovering at home after brain surgery for a blood clot.
Among those on trial are a neurosurgeon, a doctor, and a night nurse. They argue that Maradona refused further treatment and should have stayed home longer after his operation. If convicted, they could face eight to 25 years in prison.
Prosecutor Patricio Ferrari criticized Makintach for acting "like an actress." This comment followed her participation in the documentary about the case.
During court proceedings, defense lawyer Rodolfo Baque shouted "trash!" at Makintach when a trailer for the documentary was played. Maradona's daughter Gianinna and his former partner Veronica Ojeda cried upon seeing the footage.
Unauthorized filming is against court rules, and this documentary was filmed without permission. After facing criticism for her involvement, Makintach said she had "no choice" but to step down from the case.
The trial was adjourned while awaiting Thursday's decision, which declared a mistrial. Since it began, nearly 50 witnesses have testified, including Maradona's daughters.
A new date for the retrial has not yet been set, nor have new judges been nominated.
