US President Donald Trump believes Russia's participation in the 2026 World Cup could encourage peace in Ukraine.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Fifa and Uefa have banned its national football team from international competitions.
Trump has promised to end the war on "day one" if re-elected in November 2024.
Currently, Russia cannot compete in the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Qualification for the tournament began in September 2023, with 45 spots available besides the three host nations.
During a meeting about the World Cup, Trump suggested reinstating Russia might help end the conflict.
He was sitting next to Fifa president Gianni Infantino when he learned of Russia's ban.
"I didn't know that. Is that right?" Trump asked Infantino, who confirmed it.
Infantino expressed hope for peace so that Russia could return to competition.
Trump agreed it could be a good incentive for peace efforts.
He emphasized the urgency of stopping violence, noting many young lives are lost weekly.
Trump stated that Infantino is responsible for decisions regarding Russia's participation.
The BBC Sport has reached out to Fifa for comments on this matter.
In another part of the meeting, US Vice President JD Vance spoke about welcoming fans worldwide for the tournament.
However, he stressed that all supporters must "go home" after it ends.
The US will host 78 of the tournament's 104 matches, including the final.
The World Tourism Forum Institute warned strict immigration policies may disrupt international arrivals significantly.
Vance noted they expect visitors from nearly 100 countries and want them to enjoy the games.
"But when time is up," he said, "they'll have to go home."
Next month’s Fifa Club World Cup will take place across 12 stadiums in the US.
About two million overseas visitors are expected for this event.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem mentioned they are processing travel documents and visa applications now.
This preparation will help facilitate arrangements for next year's World Cup as well.
