U20 AFCON: Egypt survive late scare to knock out Ghana on penalties

Egypt secured a spot in the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations. They achieved this with a thrilling 5-4 penalty shootout win over Ghana. The match ended in a 2-2 draw after regulation and extra time at the New Suez Stadium.

This clash featured two strong teams in African youth football. The drama continued late into the night as Egypt faced a determined Ghana side. Ghana played with ten men after Aaron Essel received a red card during extra time.

The first half saw Egypt take control, scoring two goals. Momen Sherif netted both goals, starting with a powerful shot in the 19th minute. He added another goal in the 27th minute after Ghana's defense failed to clear.

Just before halftime, Ghana responded through Aziz Issah. His left-footed shot from outside the box gave them hope going into the break.

The second half was tense and tactical. Egypt seemed poised to win until VAR awarded Ghana a penalty in the 90th minute for a foul on Joseph Opoku. Abdul Sulemana converted it in the 90+11th minute, forcing extra time.

In extra time, both teams sought a winner but faced challenges. Ghana's hopes diminished when Essel was sent off for his second yellow card in the 107th minute. Egypt had chances through Omar Fathy and Amr Khaled but could not score.

The match went to penalties after no winner emerged. Both teams started strong, exchanging successful shots. For Ghana, Aziz Issah, Denis Marfo, Joseph Opoku, and Musibau Aziz scored their penalties. However, Dacosta Antwi's attempt was saved.

Egypt remained calm under pressure as Ahmed Abdin, Ahmed Kabaka, Seif El Deen Essam, Mohamed Raafat, and Abdallah Boustenji all scored their penalties successfully.

This victory marks Egypt's eighth semi-final appearance in this tournament. They will be encouraged by their performance despite having the worst goal difference among quarter-finalists.

For Ghana, this loss is another disappointment against Egypt in U20 knockout matches. It echoes their defeat in the 2013 final.

The outcome sets up an exciting final four matchup for Egypt as they aim for their fifth title. Meanwhile, Ghana exits with pride but without reward after a spirited campaign.
