For the first time in Ryder Cup history, players on next year's U.S. team will be paid to compete.
The PGA of America has agreed to a payment package, offering each player $500,000, with $300,000 of it donated to a charity of their choice. The PGA emphasized that no players requested compensation. Six players will qualify automatically via the U.S.
Ryder Cup points list, and captain Keegan Bradley will select six wildcard players.
The decision comes after last year's controversy, when Patrick Cantlay's non-wearing of the team cap was linked to dissatisfaction over lack of payment.
Rory McIlroy expressed he would pay to play, highlighting the Ryder Cup's unique, non-monetary appeal.
