Unity Cup 2025: Eddie Nketiah in line to get surprise call-up as Crystal Palace star eyes Ghana invi

Henry Asante Twum, the Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), spoke about the Unity Cup. He said it will allow Black Stars coach Otto Addo to add new players.

The tournament features the Black Stars of Ghana, Super Eagles of Nigeria, Reggae Boys of Jamaica, and Soca Warriors of Trinidad and Tobago. Coach Addo recently relied on most regular players during World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar. Ghana won both matches, extending their lead in Group I to 15 points. They are three points ahead of second-placed Comoros.

Asante Twum mentioned that fresh players will join the squad for the Unity Cup. “There will be some fresh additions while keeping the core of the team,” he said. He added that Coach Addo sees this as a chance to test new talent.

Eddie Nketiah recently expressed his desire to play for the Black Stars. Previously, he showed little interest in switching his international allegiance from England. “If Ghana invites me, I will gladly accept,” Nketiah stated in an interview.

Nketiah helped Crystal Palace win their first domestic cup title with a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup. Born in Lewisham to Ghanaian parents, his decision excited many fans eager for new talent on the national team.

The Unity Cup is scheduled from May 27 to May 31, 2025. Ghana will face Nigeria in the semifinal on May 28. The winner will advance to meet either Jamaica or Trinidad & Tobago in the final on May 31. All matches will take place at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium in West London. Coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his squad this week.
