The New York Knicks have fired head coach Tom Thibodeau. This decision follows their deepest playoff run in 25 years. The Knicks lost to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals. They were eliminated in six games by their longtime rivals.
Team president Leon Rose released a statement about the decision. He said, “Our organization is singularly focused on winning a championship for our fans.” He thanked Thibodeau for his dedication as head coach. Rose added that they believe this change is best for the organization’s future.
The Knicks surprised many by defeating the defending champion Boston Celtics. They achieved this despite losing all four regular-season games against them. Three of those losses were by double digits.
Thibodeau was the Knicks' third head coach in his NBA career. He previously coached the Chicago Bulls from 2010 to 2015 and the Timberwolves from 2016 to 2019. While he regularly led teams to the playoffs, he never reached an NBA Finals appearance.
