Black Satellites head coach Desmond Ofei says they knew it would be tough to get Jerry Afriyie for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
The forward left the team’s camp on Wednesday morning. He returned to CD Lugo after an agreement for just two games.
Afriyie assisted in the winning goal against Senegal. This victory placed Ghana second in Group C, behind DR Congo.
Before the final group game against Central African Republic, Ofei expressed concern about losing Afriyie. However, he remains hopeful they can bring him back when needed.
“Jerry [Afriyie] is an incredible talent,” he told GFA Media Team. “Everyone knows what he brings to the team.”
“He’s a true leader. We knew it would be difficult to have him at the start of the tournament. We were fortunate to have him for two games.”
“Everyone understood he would play only two games. After that, we will try to get him back at the right time.”
“We hope he won’t be gone for too long. We expect him to join us soon and will fight in his absence.”
Ghana's match against CAR is scheduled for 3 PM on Thursday. They are aiming for qualification into the quarterfinals.
