We won’t suspend league over death of Nigerian boxer – Ghana Boxing Association

Mohammed Amin Lamptey, the Communications Director of the Ghana Boxing Association, stated that the boxing league will continue. This decision comes after the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.

Lamptey emphasized that life must go on despite this tragic event. He noted that the league will not be disrupted or paused for investigations.

He responded to calls from media and stakeholders for a suspension. "If a journalist gets injured and dies, should we stop journalism?" he asked.

Gabriel Oluwasegun collapsed during a match against Ghana's John Mbanugu on March 29, 2025. He was later pronounced dead at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

On March 31, 2025, Sports Minister Kofi Adams expressed condolences on behalf of the government. He described Gabriel as a talented athlete who showed great courage in the ring.

Adams called Gabriel's death an irreplaceable loss to boxing. He extended sympathy to the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control and the global boxing community.

The Minister acknowledged that this tragedy highlights the sport's unpredictable nature. While waiting for an official medical report, he assured cooperation with the Ghana Boxing Authority for a thorough investigation.

Adams also emphasized improving athlete safety to prevent future incidents. He offered thoughts and prayers to Gabriel’s family and friends during this difficult time.
