LaLiga has criticized Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior for sharing a screenshot of an illegally streamed Champions League match during Real Madrid’s 2-0 loss to Liverpool, which he missed due to injury.
LaLiga President Javier Tebas labeled the act piracy, as Spain’s Champions League broadcasts must go through official provider Movistar.
The league filed a formal complaint with Real Madrid, urging the club to prevent similar incidents.
This controversy highlights the growing issue of illegal streaming in Spain, which leads Europe in such activity. A 2023 EU report revealed a 36.5% increase in piracy since 2021, costing LaLiga an estimated €700 million annually.
Previously, Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez faced backlash for a similar incident. LaLiga hopes these cases push clubs and players to discourage piracy.
