Wrexham's latest promotion is a miracle. The next will be even harder

Wrexham One Step Away from Premier League

Wrexham is now one step away from the Premier League. The club, owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has achieved a historic third consecutive promotion. They could soon join teams like Liverpool, Manchester United, and Arsenal in the top league.

When Reynolds and McElhenney bought Wrexham for £2 million in February 2021, the team was struggling. They had been stuck in English football's fifth tier for 13 years. Fans just wanted the cash-strapped club to survive.

The transformation under their ownership has been remarkable. Wrexham is now close to reaching the Premier League after returning to the second tier for the first time since 1982. "Our goal is to make it to the Premier League," Reynolds stated after securing promotion.

Wrexham made history by being promoted three times in a row. Their recent 3-0 win against Charlton Athletic ensured their move from League One to the EFL Championship. This victory continues their incredible rise from the National League.

Now, Wrexham faces new challenges ahead. The leap from League One to Championship is significant. The owners must prepare for a pivotal summer after this promotion.

Ipswich Town, Leicester City, and Southampton were relegated from the Premier League this season. They will receive £39 million each as "parachute payments." In contrast, Wrexham's average attendance of 12,757 would be among the smallest in the Championship.

Despite lower attendance numbers, Wrexham can attract high-profile sponsorships. Their partnership with United Airlines helped increase turnover to £26.7 million—a growth of 155% over last year.

Manager Phil Parkinson will target players with Championship or Premier League experience this summer. He may pursue free agents like Jonny Evans or Jamie Vardy to strengthen his squad.

While Wrexham has financial backing and Hollywood appeal, attracting top-tier talent remains challenging. However, Parkinson believes they can compete effectively in this competitive league.

Wrexham’s rise began with hiring an experienced manager like Parkinson who has six promotions under his belt. Players like Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee have seen less playing time due to new signings of higher caliber.

The club aims to continue recruiting players stepping down from higher levels of competition. Fans can expect an exciting summer filled with new signings as they aim for another promotion.

Achieving another promotion would be a monumental feat for Wrexham. Other clubs have successfully moved up through leagues quickly; now it's Wrexham's turn to shine on that stage.
