The United Nations has reported at least 700 deaths and 2,800 injuries in Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, following intense fighting between government forces and M23 rebels since Sunday.

The rebels, backed by Rwanda, seized the capital of North Kivu province and are now advancing towards Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu.

The conflict, which dates back to the 1990s, has escalated significantly in recent weeks, with M23 claiming to fight for minority rights and the DR Congo government accusing them of seeking control over the region's mineral wealth.

In response, DR Congo's military, supported by civilian volunteers, is attempting to halt the rebels’ progress.

Meanwhile, Rwanda's involvement has sparked tensions, with the DR Congo accusing them of occupation, while Rwanda denies allegations of annexation.

The ongoing violence has worsened the humanitarian crisis, forcing over 400,000 people to flee their homes since the beginning of 2025.
