A recent attack on the Togo-Burkina Faso border on the night of October 1-2, 2024, left 19 people dead, including 9 soldiers and 10 civilians.
The attack targeted Togolese soldiers guarding a border post and workers constructing a protective barrier to prevent armed group infiltrations.
Armed men breached the barriers, attacked patrols, and destroyed equipment.
The JNIM (Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wa al-Muslimin), linked to Al Qaeda, is suspected to be behind the attack, as they have been active in the region.
This area has been under a state of emergency since 2022 due to ongoing threats.
