Africa: AU Warns of 'Negative Impact' From U.S. Travel Ban - Urges 'Balanced,' 'Consultative' Approach

The African Union (AU) Commission is worried about recent U.S. travel restrictions. They urge the U.S. to implement these measures in a balanced way. The AU wants this to reflect the long-standing partnership with Africa.

On June 5, the Commission noted the new entry restrictions by the U.S. These restrictions affect nationals from several countries, including Eritrea, Somalia, and Sudan. While acknowledging nations' rights to protect their borders, the AU appeals for a consistent approach with historical engagement.

President Donald Trump signed the directive, effective June 9. It reinstates and expands a travel ban from his first term. Citizens from 12 countries are barred from entering the U.S., including Afghanistan and Iran. There are also partial travel restrictions on Burundi, Cuba, and others.

The U.S. government cites "large-scale presence of terrorists" in these countries as justification. They criticized failures in vetting and identity verification processes. In a video message, Trump stated that this policy aims to prevent harm to Americans.

The AU expressed concern about negative impacts on people-to-people ties and educational exchanges. They highlighted that Africa and the U.S. share mutual interests in peace and prosperity. The AU called for a more consultative approach with affected countries.

They urged constructive dialogue and transparent communication regarding these decisions. Collaborative efforts may be necessary to address underlying issues related to these measures.
