Africa: Report - Deadly Gaps

Deadly Gaps: Don't Turn Away from Saving Lives

In September 2025, the Global Fund will hold its eighth replenishment conference. This event is crucial for funding efforts against HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria. Donor countries will pledge money to support this life-saving work.

Médicins Sans Frontières (MSF) has released a report ahead of the conference. The report is based on MSF's experiences with communities they serve. It highlights challenges facing the replenishment, especially due to shrinking donor support.

Without enough funding, there will be drug shortages for HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis. People may travel far only to find dispensaries closed. Community health workers might go unpaid or receive little support. Critical prevention activities could also be neglected.

These issues are not limited to fragile settings. Even countries with functioning health systems can feel the impact if they are under-resourced.

The report includes findings from several countries: Burundi, Central African Republic (CAR), Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Guinea, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Pakistan, Philippines, South Sudan, and Sudan.

The stakes for this replenishment are high. Now is the time to act. We must protect gains made in fighting these diseases and ensure a future free from their threat to millions of lives.
