Geneva — Professor Mohamed Yakub Janabi was nominated as the next Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region. This nomination occurred during a Special Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa in Geneva. The session was held ahead of the World Health Assembly.
The Special Session was organized after the sudden death of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, who was the Regional Director-elect. Other candidates included Dr. N'da Konan Michel Yao from Cote d'Ivoire, Dr. Mohammed Lamine Dramé from Guinea, and Professor Moustafa Mijiyawa from Togo.
Professor Janabi's nomination will be submitted to the WHO Executive Board. This board will meet for its 157th session on May 28-29, 2025, in Geneva. The new Regional Director will serve a five-year term and can be reappointed once.
In his acceptance remarks, Professor Janabi expressed his commitment to improving health in the region. He thanked everyone for their trust and support. "I will not let you down," he said. He emphasized the need for unity to tackle challenges like infectious diseases and climate change.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, congratulated Professor Janabi on his nomination. He also praised other candidates for their campaigns.
"I offer my warm congratulations to Professor Janabi," said Dr. Tedros. He acknowledged that this is a crucial time for both Africa and WHO as a whole. He looks forward to working with Professor Janabi for a healthier Africa.
Dr. Tedros also thanked Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, Acting WHO Regional Director for Africa, for his service during the transition period after Dr. Matshidiso Moeti's term ended.
Dr. Ihekweazu congratulated Professor Janabi and wished him success in his new role. "This reflects the trust Member States have placed in you," he said. He noted that while progress has been made in health, significant challenges remain ahead.
