Washington D.C. — U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Michael E. Langley testified yesterday before the Senate Armed Services Committee. He presented the command's 2025 posture statement and emphasized Africa's strategic importance.
Langley stated, "Everything we do has one overarching goal: achieving peace through strength." He outlined three requirements for this goal: understanding national security threats, building a strong network of allies, and ensuring proper military resources.
Langley assessed the terrorist threat in Africa. He noted the growing risk from violent extremists like ISIS and al Shabaab. He warned that if left unchecked, these groups could directly threaten the U.S. homeland.
He also discussed strategic competitors in Africa. Langley highlighted the Chinese Communist Party's aim to dominate globally using Africa. He mentioned how Russia exploits chaos and instability on the continent.
To protect U.S. interests, Langley stressed the need to deter these nations and their harmful actions in Africa.
