Zambia and Orlando Pride forward Barbra Banda has been crowned the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year, following an exceptional season that saw her break records and earn accolades.

Banda, 24, received the award after topping a global fan vote from a shortlist of five players, which included Spain’s Aitana Bonmati and USA’s Sophia Smith.

The Zambia captain made history at the Paris Olympics by becoming Africa’s all-time leading scorer with 10 goals, including a first-half hat-trick against Australia.

Joining Orlando Pride in March, she netted 13 goals in the NWSL regular season and led the team to their maiden championship title with four playoff goals, earning MVP honors.

Grateful for the recognition, Banda attributed her success to hard work and consistency, thanking her supporters and teammates.
