Bill Gates' Commitment to Africa
Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, plans to spend his $200 billion fortune. He aims to improve health and education services in Africa over the next 20 years.
The 69-year-old believes that enhancing health and education will unleash human potential. He stated that every African country can achieve prosperity through these improvements.
While speaking in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital, Gates encouraged young innovators. He urged them to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) for better healthcare in Africa.
Last month, Gates announced he would give away 99% of his wealth by 2045. His foundation plans to end its operations by then.
"I recently committed to giving away my wealth over the next 20 years," he said at the African Union headquarters. "Most of this funding will help address challenges here in Africa."
Graça Machel, Mozambique's former First Lady, welcomed his announcement. She noted it comes during a "moment of crisis."
"We are counting on Mr. Gates' commitment to walk this path of transformation with us," she added.
The US government has cut aid to Africa under President Donald Trump's "America First" policy. This includes programs for treating HIV/AIDS patients, raising concerns about healthcare's future on the continent.
Gates emphasized that his foundation will focus on improving primary healthcare in Africa.
