Botswana President Says Seeking Presidency Beyond Ten Years Is Only Done By Failures

Botswana President Duma Boko has criticized leaders who seek term extensions. He called them failures for wanting to serve beyond the 10-year limit.

Boko, elected last year, spoke at a housing project launch in Gaborone. His remarks were shared on social media and sparked debate among Zimbabweans. They are concerned about President Emmerson Mnangagwa's attempts to amend the constitution for an illegal extension.

"Any President who wants more than ten years is a failure," Boko stated. He emphasized that serious leaders should not desire long tenures. "Staying in power over ten years shows a lack of understanding of the job."

Mnangagwa is currently in his second and final term but seeks a three-year extension. Supporters argue this extension is necessary, while others believe it denies his deputy, Constantino Chiwenga, a chance to lead.

Zanu PF has prepared a constitutional amendment bill for this extension. Opposition legislators from the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) are aware of these plans.

A recent move to grant residential stands to parliamentarians raised suspicions. Critics see it as an effort to secure Mnangagwa's position and prevent impeachment calls from within his party.

War veteran Blessed Geza leads the faction demanding Mnangagwa's resignation. He blames him for rising corruption and poor governance.

On March 31, protests shook the government. In response, police and soldiers received unexplained allowances to maintain order and discourage potential coups.
