Central African Republic: Justice Delayed in Central African Republic

One Year into Detention, Researcher Still Hasn't Had Trial

Last week marked one year since Joseph Figueira Martin was arrested. He was taken into custody in the Central African Republic. Russian forces arrested him in Zemio while he conducted research for FHI 360. This American organization aims to reduce poverty and prevent gender-based violence.

As his family and friends remember this difficult anniversary, there is still no trial date. Joseph, a Portuguese-Belgian citizen, worked at the International Crisis Group for several years. His colleagues respected him as smart and caring. He became an expert on Central Africa and worked with various international organizations.

For the past year, he has been held in Camp de Roux in Bangui. This military prison houses high-profile prisoners. Authorities accuse him of financing armed groups like the Union for Peace. They also claim he undermined state security.

Since his arrest, the government has claimed to have substantial evidence against him. If this is true, they should allow a timely trial as required by law. The United Nations Human Rights Committee emphasizes the right to a speedy trial. This helps prevent uncharged individuals from being held for long periods.

One year later, his family seeks to move his case forward. They believe he can explain the evidence against him. They are convinced he came to help the Central African Republic, not harm it. Only a court can establish the truth of these claims.

It is time for authorities to end his prolonged detention without trial. Due process must be followed in this case. If they lack sufficient evidence after more than a year, they should release Joe.
