Chad Retaliates Against U.S. Travel Ban, Halts Visa Issuance to Americans

A new travel ban has affected 12 countries. Seven other countries face visa restrictions.

Chad's President, Mahamat Deby, responded to the ban by suspending visas for US citizens. He announced this on Thursday. This was one day after Donald Trump signed the travel ban.

The new US travel ban includes Chad and six other African nations. These are the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, Somalia, and Sudan.

Trump stated that the ban aims to protect the US from foreign terrorists. He emphasized that it is crucial to identify potential threats before they enter the country.

In response, Chad will implement reciprocity by halting visa issuance to Americans. President Deby posted on Facebook about this decision. He said Chad may lack resources but values its dignity and pride.

The African Union Commission warned that these travel restrictions could harm diplomatic relations with the US. They urged a more balanced approach in decision-making regarding Africa.

The commission appealed for evidence-based actions that reflect the long-standing partnership between Africa and the United States.
