Chinese nationals arrested with gold bars and $800,000 cash in DR Congo

Three Chinese nationals have been arrested in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with 12 gold bars and $800,000 in cash, hidden under the seats of their vehicle.

The operation, kept secret due to concerns over influential connections in Kinshasa, was based on a tip-off.

Eastern DRC is rich in gold, diamonds, and minerals used for electronics, but foreign groups, including militia, have long exploited these resources, fueling instability.

The arrested men’s connection to illegal mining in the region is under investigation, as the DRC struggles to clean up its mineral sector, especially following the controversial release of 17 Chinese nationals last month.
