Congo-Kinshasa: Armed Violence Displaces Thousands As Cholera Outbreak Worsens

Violence in North and South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) continues. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warns that civilians are being killed, injured, and displaced.

On Thursday, intense clashes occurred between local armed groups and M23 rebels. These clashes were reported in Masisi Centre, North Kivu. Preliminary reports indicate at least two civilian deaths and multiple injuries. Several wounded individuals were evacuated to Masisi General Hospital.

Many civilians remain trapped in their homes due to ongoing crossfire. This situation has increased fear and limited access to basic needs.

OCHA stated that "the volatility of frontlines and ongoing combat" makes assessments difficult. Despite international support, armed groups have gained ground recently. The M23 movement claims to defend Congolese Tutsi interests and is reportedly backed by Rwandan forces. The extremist group Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) also remains active in the area.

In eastern Masisi, where security permits, UN partners are providing critical aid. OCHA noted that since yesterday, partners have distributed household and hygiene kits. More than 500 displaced households in Sake's collective centre received assistance.
