Five sentenced to death in Nigeria over ‘witchcraft’ murder

Prosecutors hope the ruling will serve as a warning against mob justice Prosecutors hope the ruling will serve as a warning against mob justice

In Kano state, Nigeria, five men have been sentenced to death by hanging for the brutal murder of 67-year-old Dahare Abubakar, who was accused of witchcraft.

The men attacked her on her farm after one accused, Abdulaziz Yahaya, claimed his wife had a disturbing dream involving Ms. Abubakar, fueling their belief in her guilt.

The case sparked national concern over witchcraft accusations in rural areas, where such claims often lead to violence without proof.

Prosecutors hope the ruling will serve as a warning against mob justice.

The defense has announced plans to appeal, even as the victim’s son expressed relief at the conviction.

Death penalties in Nigeria are seldom carried out, with many convicts remaining on death row.
