Former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has made serious accusations against Senegal. He claims Senegal is illegally stealing oil from Gambian waters. He also blames the coalition government for being complicit in this theft.
In an audio message, Jammeh expressed disappointment in Senegal's leadership. He specifically criticized Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko for allowing exploitation of Gambian resources. Jammeh stated that the oil theft has been ongoing due to a secret alliance between Macky Sall and President Barrow.
When oil was discovered in The Gambia, Macky Sall commented on its potential value. He jokingly said, "you know we can steal it." Jammeh interpreted this as an admission of complicity by the coalition government.
Jammeh recalled a visit to Senegal after the coalition's election victory. During this visit, he claimed an agreement was signed for sharing oil profits. He labeled Macky Sall a "well-known thief" who used Barrow to exploit Gambia’s resources.
He expressed disappointment in Sonko, whom he once respected. Jammeh warned that any attempt by Senegal to annex Gambia would face strong resistance.
"If Senegal tries to annex Gambia, I will wipe them out," he declared. He described the Senegalese army as cowardly and incapable of facing true patriots.
His remarks have caused outrage on social media and among political observers. Critics fear his statements could heighten tensions between the two countries. As of now, neither the Senegalese nor Gambian governments have responded officially to these allegations.
Tributes are pouring in for journalist Fatou Samba amid these developments.
