Ghana: Accra Plains to Become Administrative Capital - President Mahama

Ghana will have a new administrative capital. President John Dramani Mahama announced this on Friday. The goal is to reduce congestion in Accra.

The government plans to develop a new city on the Accra Plains. Selected government offices will move to this new hub. It will connect to Accra via an expressway and railway line.

President Mahama shared this information during his visit to Dodowa. He thanked the region for supporting him in the December 2024 elections.

He stated that the new city would be located between Greater Accra, Eastern, and Volta regions. It will stretch to the banks of the Volta River. There will be a railway link and express lane connecting it to Accra.

Mahama explained that Accra is overstretched. The city faces issues like urbanization, traffic congestion, and poor infrastructure. A long-term plan for a new city is necessary to ease these problems.

He first proposed this idea in May 2024 before the general elections. This was during a meeting with the European Union Ambassador and EU Chamber of Commerce.

Regarding road infrastructure, Mahama acknowledged motorists' frustrations with poor roads. He promised fast-tracked rehabilitation of key road corridors in the region. These include Adenta-Dodowa, La-Teshie link, Tema-Harbour-Motorway, and others.

Additional roads like Dawhenya-Afienya and Ashaiman-Madina will also be improved. Expansion works on several other roads are planned to ease traffic flow.

Mahama announced the reintroduction of national sanitation day for cleaner cities. Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) will oversee this initiative.

Households must keep their frontages and drains clean or face penalties. Cleanliness will be a key performance indicator for MMDCEs’ success in office.

Mahama expressed gratitude to Greater Accra Region's people for their support in his second term. Oboade Notse King Odaifio Welentsi III advised him to use his experience wisely.

He emphasized that learning from past mistakes is crucial for future success. Ignoring these lessons could harm both Mahama's party and reputation.
