Ghana: Hope Restored As Sagnarigu Community Dam Is Dredged

Residents of Sagnarigu in the Tamale Municipality are relieved. The community's only dam has been successfully dredged. This dam is a vital water source for them.

The project was a team effort. It involved Traditional Authorities, the Member of Parliament, and the Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly. Residents call it a "life-saving" initiative.

When the Ghanaian Times visited on Friday, many gathered to celebrate. Schoolchildren, elders, and local leaders were present. They all witnessed this important moment for their community.

Alhaji Issahaku Mahama, a community elder, shared past struggles. He said, "We've struggled for so long." Children often arrived late to school because they fetched water from far away. He believes this dam brings relief and restores dignity.

Mariam Fuseini is a mother of three. She used to wake up before dawn to find water. Sometimes she walked over an hour with her children. Now she can spend more time with her family.

The dredged dam will improve access to water for homes and farms. This is especially important during the dry season. Community members are hopeful about better health, education, and livelihoods.

Mr. Issah Mohammed is a teacher in the area. He noted that pupils will no longer miss school due to water chores. Access to water from the dam will help their performance and well-being.

He praised traditional authorities for their partnership with the MP and district assembly. This collaboration highlights the importance of community-led development.
