Namibia could elect its first female president this week, with Vice-President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of the ruling Swapo party vying for the position.
At 72, Nandi-Ndaitwah has served in high government roles for 25 years, but faces a challenge from Panduleni Itula of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC).
Itula, 67, a former Swapo member and trained dentist, has gained support for his bold, reformist style and appeal to young voters.
However, Swapo’s dominance has been slipping, with the party facing economic issues, corruption concerns, and high youth unemployment.
The election, set for November 27, may lead to a second-round run-off, as both candidates represent different visions for Namibia’s future.
