John Legend has dismissed backlash over his performance in Rwanda, despite the country’s alleged support for M23 rebels in DR Congo.
Speaking to the BBC, he argued that citizens should not be punished for their government’s actions.
The controversy follows reports that Rwanda has sent 4,000 troops into DR Congo, fueling violence that has displaced hundreds of thousands.
Critics say Legend should have boycotted the concert, as fellow artist Tems did.
However, he insisted his role in Move Afrika was to promote Africa’s music industry, not politics.
Despite strong criticism online, including accusations of "soft campaigning" for Rwanda, Legend stood by his decision, stating he performed for the people, not the government.
