Kenya to swear in new deputy president after court lifts stay order

Kithure Kindiki will be sworn in as Kenya's new Deputy President on Friday after a court lifted a ban on his inauguration, following legal challenges from his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua.

Gachagua was impeached by parliament in October on charges of gross constitutional violations and inciting ethnic hatred, claims he denies.

His attempts to block Kindiki's swearing-in included over 30 court challenges.

The High Court's decision comes amid ongoing political turbulence in Kenya, marked by protests over tax hikes and a push for a unity government by President William Ruto, which sidelined Gachagua.

Kindiki was previously the interior minister and a key figure in Ruto's election campaign.
