Monrovia — The opposition Alternative National Congress (ANC) has criticized Representative Richard Koon and the "Majority Bloc" in the House of Representatives. They accuse them of ignoring the Supreme Court's authority. This, they say, threatens Liberia's fragile democracy.
In a press statement on Wednesday, the ANC praised the Supreme Court's recent ruling. They believe it provides "much-needed clarity" amid a constitutional standoff in the House. The ruling addressed what they call an "unlawful power struggle" among lawmakers.
The ANC, led by Alexander B. Cummings, condemned Rep. Koon and his allies. They described their defiance of the Supreme Court as "a brazen assault on our democracy." The party warned that ignoring the Court could lead to a "constitutional crisis."
The main issue is control of the House of Representatives. Rival factions are holding separate sessions and making conflicting announcements. This disrupts normal legislative work.
The Supreme Court reaffirmed constitutional procedures for leadership claims and legislative decisions. It declared Speaker J. Fonati Koffa as the duly elected Speaker of the House.
Call to President Boakai
The ANC urged President Joseph Boakai to uphold the Constitution. They stated that as Head of State, he must ensure laws are enforced. Ignoring this duty would be a betrayal of his oath.
So far, President Boakai has not publicly responded to the ruling or ongoing disputes in the House. The ANC also called on Liberia’s development partners to support constitutional governance. They emphasized that elected officials should not undermine constitutional order.
