Monrovia — The Cable Consortium of Liberia (CCL) is working with the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA). They are redirecting the country's undersea internet cable from beneath PHP Park in Monrovia. This move aims to end ongoing connectivity issues nationwide.
On April 2, CCL CEO Henry Benson inspected the site. He revealed that a section of the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) fiber-optic cable was damaged. This damage occurred under a monument in the park. The monument was built despite warnings against construction over vital telecommunications infrastructure.
Benson stated, "The ACE, Orange Liberia, Lonestar Cell MTN, LTA, and CCL warned the former administration." They advised against building over the cable, but their warnings were ignored.
To avoid demolishing PHP Park while restoring internet service, Benson announced plans for redirection. A team from the global internet consortium responsible for ACE will arrive on April 22. The redirection work will cause intermittent disruptions from April 23 to April 28 and cost about US$200,000.
Benson explained that the ACE cable lies beneath heavy rocks. These rocks shift with every tide, increasing the risk of total internet failure. CCL considered demolishing PHP Park but chose to reroute instead due to its cultural significance.
He said, "In collaboration with LTA and our stakeholders, we decided to relocate the cable." This decision aims to ensure uninterrupted connectivity for everyone.
Benson praised the Liberian government and LTA for their support. He noted that without internet access, there would be serious social and economic consequences. Many Liberians would prioritize maintaining internet service over preserving the park.
He also acknowledged coordination with key government institutions like LWSC and LEC. The LWSC has agreed to avoid future pipe installations in that area. Additionally, they removed part of Blue Field stadium and adjusted pole placements with LEC's help.
Benson concluded by commending their outstanding support throughout this process.
