Liberia: Former President Weah, ANC Leader Cummings Hold Private Meeting Amid Rising Political Speculation

Monrovia — Former President George Manneh Weah met with Alternative National Congress (ANC) leader Alexander B. Cummings on Monday evening. The meeting took place at Weah's home on 9th Street in Monrovia. It was a private, closed-door discussion that lasted over an hour. A select group of aides from both sides attended.

No official statements have been released by either Weah or Cummings. However, sources say they discussed national affairs and challenges facing the opposition. They also talked about building a unified front.

A political insider shared that they discussed the future under the Boakai administration. They explored how responsible opposition leadership could address growing discontent in Liberia. The country is currently facing economic hardship and political division.

Public protests have increased due to complaints about selective justice and delayed reforms. Many believe the meeting between Weah and Cummings could be significant for the fragmented opposition bloc. Political observers suggest it may signal a realignment ahead of the 2029 elections.

Weah and Cummings have different political identities but share common challenges. Political analyst Samuel McCauley noted their need to stay relevant in demanding times. This meeting might lead to a strategic partnership or coordinated response to Liberia's issues.

Despite no formal declarations after the meeting, observers note its sensitivity. A senior diplomat mentioned that immediate media engagement is unlikely for such discussions. If substantial outcomes arise, they may take time to consider their implications before announcing anything.

Civil society groups reacted with cautious optimism to news of the meeting. Youth advocate Martha Nimley emphasized the importance of dialogue among leaders during divided times. She hopes this leads to cooperation on key national issues.

Weah served as president from 2018 until conceding defeat in 2023. Since leaving office, he has kept a low profile but recently criticized aspects of the current government’s performance. He highlighted issues like selective governance and missed development opportunities.

Cummings finished third in the 2023 presidential election but remains active through advocacy and civic engagement. He calls for transparency and accountability while positioning ANC as a reformist movement.

His meetings with youth groups and civil society leaders keep him visible as his party rebuilds its grassroots base.

The contrast between Weah and Cummings is notable; one is a former football star turned populist president, while the other is a former Coca-Cola executive with technocratic views on governance. Despite their differences, both men are seen as potential catalysts for reorganization within the opposition.

Political strategist Emmanuel Tarpeh believes informal coordination could energize a struggling opposition landscape. He stated neither can win alone at this point but finding common ground could reshape national politics.
