Mali: MSF Resumes Medical Activities in Central Mali

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has resumed activities in Nampala, Mali. Our staff had to evacuate on December 10, 2024. This was due to violence against our teams and movement restrictions. We could no longer support local health facilities effectively.

Now, MSF teams are back in the area. They are currently working at the Nampala health center. We plan to expand our services to the outskirts of Nampala. Our goal is to provide free healthcare to the community.

Ximena Andrea Campos Moreno, MSF medical manager, describes the situation and challenges faced by our teams.

The general situation in Nampala remains tense. There is ongoing fighting between Malian armed forces and non-state armed groups. This conflict has caused frequent displacements within the community. Many people have moved from the outskirts to central Nampala and into Mauritania. For months, Nampala was cut off from food and basic goods.

Local residents found it nearly impossible to carry out daily activities. Some medical staff also left town due to these difficulties. Although movements are resuming, the situation is still unstable.

Access to healthcare is limited due to insecurity and a lack of qualified personnel. Essential medicines are also scarce, leading to growing medical needs. It is crucial for people to access basic healthcare services.

Currently, women and children need medical assistance most urgently. There are many cases of malaria affecting children under five and pregnant women.

We are also concerned about malnutrition cases, respiratory infections, and diarrheal illnesses caused by a lack of clean drinking water. These are the main health issues that MSF teams encounter.

To continue our work in this region, we must navigate a complex environment. Constant communication with local, regional, and national players is essential for ensuring safety for our teams and patients.
