Mali's military leader, Col Assimi Goïta, has dismissed Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maïga and his government amid growing tensions over the delayed return to democracy.
Maïga recently criticized the junta for unilaterally postponing elections without government consultation, calling the move undemocratic.
The dismissal follows months of strained relations between Maïga and the military, fueled by his public opposition to the junta's prolonged rule.
A pro-military group even demanded Maïga's resignation, labeling his criticism a betrayal.
Maïga, appointed in 2021 after the junta’s second coup, had supported a document criticizing the military's extended stay in power.
His sacking deepens uncertainty over Mali's transition, with speculation he could emerge as an opposition figure.
Locals remain divided on his legacy and future role.
