Chidimma Adetshina, who came second in the Miss Universe competition, expressed pride in her achievement, also being named Miss Africa and Oceania.
She made history, despite missing out on the crown to Miss Denmark, Victoria Kjær Theilvig.
Originally from South Africa, Adetshina faced xenophobic abuse and trolling after her Nigerian heritage came to light.
She was later involved in a nationality dispute, which led her to compete in Miss Nigeria, eventually qualifying for Miss Universe.
Adetshina, a law student, remains proud of both her South African and Nigerian roots.
She is the highest-placed black African in Miss Universe since Zozibini Tunzi's win in 2019.
