Rundu – Kavango East governor Hamunyera Hambyuka has called for teamwork to tackle suspected food poisoning in the region. He spoke at a press conference after two children died from suspected food poisoning in Korokoko Village on Sunday. The children, aged three and four, were victims of this tragic incident.
Following the event, the governor asked health inspectors to check all food outlets. He wants to ensure that expired food is not being sold.
Hambyuka emphasized the need for collaboration among police, traditional leaders, and political leaders. He urged everyone to work together to prevent such incidents. His office is open for anyone who can provide information about this crime.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the children ate cassava roots at home on Saturday around 1 PM. The entire family consumed the cassava, which was prepared by one child's mother.
Sources reported that nine to ten hours later, the children and one adult felt weak and vomited. Tragically, both children died shortly after.
Three other family members who ate the same cassava were hospitalized. They are currently stable at Nyangana District Hospital. Meanwhile, a social worker from the Ministry of Health is providing support to the grieving family.
Governor Hambyuka expressed concern over losing young lives in such circumstances. He stated that Namibia cannot afford these losses as they impact future citizens who could contribute to national development.
He noted a troubling rise in food poisoning cases in the region. Similar incidents occurred in Kayova Village on May 27, 2023; Livayi Village on February 26, 2024; and Ndonga Linena Village on June 1, 2024—all resulting in young lives lost.
The governor urged residents of Korokoko and nearby villages to assist investigators with any helpful information. He remains hopeful that those responsible will face justice for their actions.
