Namibia: Sam Khubis - Battle That Shaped Namibia

To reach the sacred battlefield of Sam Khubis, take the unpaved C14 and D1290 roads. It’s an hour's journey to this historic site. Over a century ago, the Baster community sought refuge in these hills. They bravely fought against the German Schutztruppe in May 1915.

The battle occurred on various farms. Key locations included Uitdraai, Garies, and others from May 1 to May 5. On May 5, the Basters raised their community flag to honor fallen victims.

Years later, hundreds gathered at Sam Khubis to pay tribute. They remembered those who fought to protect their land. The annual commemoration coincided with International Workers' Day and Cassinga Day.

This year marked the 110-year anniversary of the battle. Attendees wore traditional attire for a church service at Paulus Kirche Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rehoboth. Citizens expressed gratitude for divine intervention that saved them from destruction by German forces.

Hardap governor Riaan McNab spoke on behalf of vice president Lucia Witbooi. He praised Kaptein and the Sam Khubis Committee for improving infrastructure at the site. He noted that community members now appreciate this historical event more deeply.

The moment allowed reflection on "De Gelofte." This is the pledge made by their forefathers to God during their struggle on May 8, 1915. After the service, torchbearers led attendees to Hermanus van Wyk community hall. There, they hoisted the Baster flag and lit a torch to signal festivities had begun.

A horse parade followed as residents traveled from Rehoboth to Klein Aub with camping gear. By sunset, everyone settled in for camping festivities that began with lighting a torch. The night continued with re-enactments and a gun salute at dawn.

For first-time attendees, re-enactments were unexpected and intense reminders of history. After sunrise, a religious ceremony took place alongside 'De Gelofte.' Attendees included Baster Kaptein Jacky Britz and other leaders.

The event featured wreath-laying at gravesites, prayers, and singing of festival songs. This year, individuals pledged over N$30,000 for maintaining Sam Khubis memorials and grounds. More than a century later, residents honored their forefathers who fought bravely for recognition.
