Nigeria: CJN Extols Late Ex-Supreme Court Judge's Contributions to Nigeria's Laws

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, spoke at a court session honoring the late Mr. Ogwuegbu. He was a former Supreme Court Justice who passed away on October 28, 2024, at age 91.

CJN Kekere-Ekun stated that Mr. Ogwuegbu's judgments did more than resolve disputes. They elevated Nigeria's legal system and enriched its jurisprudence. She emphasized that his life and work strengthened democracy and reflected national conscience.

"His contributions will continue to illuminate our courts," she said. "His legacy is embedded in our moral and legal consciousness." Throughout his career, he combined erudition, clarity, and compassion.

He wrote with precision and reasoned with rigor. As a Supreme Court Justice, he significantly shaped Nigeria's legal landscape. His deep insight advanced constitutional governance and individual liberties.

Jurisprudence studies how laws are created, interpreted, and applied. A judge's influence is measured by their contributions to this field.

CJN Kekere-Ekun described Mr. Ogwuegbu as a torchbearer of justice for over four decades. He was dignified, humble, and empathetic—qualities that humanized the law.

"He listened intently and treated everyone with respect," she added. The Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, urged judges to meet expectations in administering justice fairly.

Fagbemi praised the late Justice Ogwuegbu for his dedication to justice without fear or favor. The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, highlighted that true judicial measure lies in impact rather than tenure.

Mr. Osigwe called Mr. Ogwuegbu a judicial titan who clarified laws for stronger institutions and democracy. He noted that Ogwuegbu exemplified independence of thought amid political pressures while adhering to justice.
